What We Do

What is massage?

Massage is the therapeutic practice of manipulating the muscles and limbs to ease tension and reduce pain. It can be a part of physical therapy or practiced on its own. It also can reduce the symptoms of disorders or pain in the muscles and nervous system and often reduces stress.

Massage applies movements such as rubbing, pressing, and manipulating your muscles, skin, ligaments, and tendons. But it varies from being light stroking to deep pressure. Massage aims to relax the tissue, increase blood flow and oxygen levels, and decreases pain.

Here are three common types of massages:
Deep Massage

Deep massage means using more forceful, slower strokes to trigger the deeper layers of your connective tissue and muscle. It is more commonly used to help relieve muscle damage from any injury. Deep tissue massage will work out the knots from stressed, overworked muscles and connective tissue (fascia) to alleviate immediate pain, as well as chronic joint and muscle pain. It also promotes faster healing by increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation. Deep pressure can be a little uncomfortable only while receiving your massage in these areas that need it most. It can lead to some soreness but usually subsides in a day or two, much like after a workout.

Swedish Massage

A Swedish massage relaxes and soothes the body through effleurage. Effleurage is a succession of strokes applied by gliding the hand over an extended portion of the body. These types of movements help increase the level of oxygen in the blood and improve circulation and flexibility. In an entire body Swedish massage, your therapist will usually start by massaging your back and neck, then the legs, arms, hands, and sometimes the feet. This type of massage sometimes includes a relaxing head massage (also known as a scalp massage, Indian head massage, or Champissage). The techniques involve soft strokes over areas more prone to pain or without much muscle coverage.

Trigger Point Massage

Trigger point release works around tight muscle fibers that can form in your muscles after you face an injury or under extreme stress.  It uses deep static touch and deep gliding to get tight muscles and knots that are causing pain and discomfort to release. This type of massage is the most profound pressure and can be painful. But in the instance that you need trigger point work, it is necessary to get those muscles to stop responding to the stress or cause of the tension. Release work most likely will lead to soreness. Still, the pain that caused you to seek this kind of massage usually is alleviated or eliminated immediately following the massage.
